John McAfee’s cremation has left me with more questions and suspicion, says his wife Janice

JOHN McAfee’s widow says she has been left in a state of “anger bordering on rage” rather than closure after finally being given her husband’s body following a three-year battle with Spanish authorities.

Janice McAfee, currently doing odd-jobs to get by after being depleted of all her savings since her husband’s arrest in October 2020, was given the remains for cremation last month.

However, fresh details about the condition of the tech entrepreneur’s body have come to light which the 40-year-old says “makes it difficult to not draw certain conclusions”.

“I was able to finally have his body released to me and cremated on December 15, but during the process I found out some additional information that has only raised more questions,” Janice explained.

“And that information is that for the first six months of his body being in the custody of the anatomical in Barcelona, they only kept him in a refrigerated state - thereby completely destroying any opportunity for an independent autopsy.

Happier times, before John's arrest in Spain

In addition, for eight months after John’s apparent suicide on June 23 2021, the prison held its own investigation, which again prevented an independent autopsy.

Earlier on the day of his death, the Spanish National Court had granted his extradition to the US where he was wanted for tax evasion.

And while many saw that as a key factor behind a reason for suicide, Mrs McAfee has maintained her doubt throughout, largely because that route had never been discussed or even hinted at during the couple’s daily phone calls together.

“This situation ended in a way that neither me nor John foresaw. John was very intelligent. He was a man with a plan, and a man with an ace up his sleeve. Always.”

“The official cause of death has been recorded as ‘asphyxiation by suicide’, but the problem I have with that is that he was alive when they found him. He was alive. He had a pulse, he was breathing when he was found in the cell,” she stressed to The Digital Commonwealth several weeks ago.

“So what I want is the autopsy report so that I can know what happened from the time that they found him to the time that they pronounced him dead. Nothing in the paperwork they have given me explains that.”

It was four months after John’s death when Janice learned from CCTV footage that her husband was still alive when he was found. A fact which gave her dogged determination to find answers and be given the opportunity of an independent autopsy.

“But the fact they kept him in only a refrigerated state for the first sixth months completely destroyed the opportunity for an independent autopsy to understand what happened to John,” she sighed.

“When you couple that with their refusal to give me their autopsy report, it’s just very difficult to not drawn certain conclusions about what has happened here with John.

“I thought I would feel some sense of relief or a sense of closure but, instead, I feel anger, bordering on rage.”

The Digital Commonwealth has contacted various authorities in Spain involved in the case. No responses have yet been received.
