FORMER crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried has expressed remorse over the FTX scandal from his prison cell in New York.

The 32-year-old entrepreneur was sentenced last week to 25 years behind bars after being convicted on seven counts of conspiracy and fraud following the $8 billion collapse of the FTX exchange in 2022.

At Thursday's sentencing, Bankman-Fried - often referred to as 'SBF' - expressed little in the way of contrition.

However, speaking to ABC News, the founder of FTX said he was haunted by what has happened.

"It's most of what I think about each day," he said.

"I never thought that what I was doing was illegal. But I tried to hold myself to a high standard, and I certainly didn't meet that standard.

"I've heard and seen the despair, frustration and sense of betrayal from thousands of customers; they deserve to be paid in full, at current price - that could and should have happened in November 2022, and it could and should happen today. It's excruciating to see them waiting, day after day."
